This is it

Derek Sivers (indirectly) taught me that I’m a very future-focused person. This is why, since I can remember, I always think the future will be better.

Most of the times where I was enjoying what I was doing or what I just accomplished, I always qualified it with “and when X is in place, it will be even better”.

I just turned 40 and have slowly realized that, no matter how much improvement the future brings, those moments of enjoyment and achievement in my past are quite unique and irrepeatable. They don’t come back in that exaact same way.

So now, I’m changing my qualification. Whenever I’m happy about an outcome, or dreaming of a new one, I tell myself: “Remember: this is it”. It’s this moment, this life. The future can only exist in the present.

Tomorrow will be different, and will probably be better. But today, I want appreciate what already is.
