Signal vs noise in interesting times

Writing from April 2026, we seem to live in very interesting times. Geopolitically and technologically.

Perhaps I’m stating something obvious or wrong, but I feel that what I read in the news and I hear being commented by others contains much more signal than usual, during quieter times. Perhaps what’s important (war, AI) is so evident that we’re concerned more with it, and not so much with minutiae.

I wonder if it was the same historically: if the media spent more time on things later considered to be important during times of crisis and transformation. Because then that analysis could be an ex-post measure of the degree of crisis/transformation of a given time.
